How to turn coconut milk into whipped cream.

Turning a can of coconut milk into whipped cream is easier than you think. But, it does take a little bit of pre-planning. To make vegan whipped cream, you have to chill a can of coconut milk in the refrigerator until the cream separates from the milk and solidifies. You’ll then scrape just the cream into a bowl and whip it in a stand mixer, or with a hand mixer. In just a few minutes, you’ll have whipped cream!

Then, I recommend chilling the coconut whipped cream in the fridge for a few hours to get more of a thick, scoop-able consistency that holds its shape. Use this whipped cream for pancakes, sticky toffee pudding, parfaits, or even fold it into your homemade ice cream to make it extra fluffy!

Is that it? Just really one ingredient?

Yup! A can of chilled coconut milk is all you need to make homemade whipped cream. I find the natural sweetness of the coconut to be perfect, but if you want a bit more sweetness you can add about 2-3 tbsp of powdered sugar per can of coconut milk. Just whip that in with the coconut to make a sweet and fluffy cream. You can also add a bit of vanilla for even more flavor (recommended)! But the simplest form of this recipe with just the coconut by itself is perfect on its own.

How much whipped cream will I get?

That depends on the can of coconut milk you use. The quality differs by brand, but you can expect about half of the can of coconut milk to separate into cream. If you want to make a lot of whipped cream, use more cans of coconut milk!

Recipe

Prep Time: 8 hrs

Active Time: 10 mins

INGREDIENTS

  • 1 can of coconut milk (15 oz)

  • 1 tsp vanilla (optional)

  • 2-3 tbsp powdered sugar (optional)

DIRECTIONS

  1. Place one can of coconut milk in the refrigerator overnight. This will allow the coconut cream to harden and separate from the milk. Be careful not to shake the can of coconut milk.

  2. When you’re ready to make whipped cream, open the can of coconut milk, being careful not to shake the can. Scoop out the solid cream on top and place it in a medium bowl. The amount of cream you get will depend on the brand of coconut milk you use. You can expect that about half of the can of coconut milk will be coconut cream.

  3. Whip the coconut cream on medium speed in either a stand mixer or with a hand mixer. This should only take a couple of minutes. Make sure your coconut cream is cold so it whips up faster! If the cream is too solid, use a few spoonfuls of the coconut milk to thin it out so it whips better.

  4. (Optional): Add 1 tsp of vanilla to your cream and whip again. This will add more flavor to your whipped cream.

  5. (Optional): Add 2-3 tbsp of powdered sugar to your cream and whip again. This will make your whipped cream sweeter.

  6. Transfer the whipped cream to a small bowl and place in the fridge, covered, for 1-2 hours. This will make the whipped cream thicker.
